Taking a look at tonight’s rematch between the Philadelphia Eagles and visiting Washington Redskins, here are the top three matchups to watch as the Eagles look to increase their lead over Washington and hold steady over Dallas in the NFC East.
1. Eagles wide receiver Alshon Jeffery vs. Redskins cornerbacks. In the first meeting, the anticipated battle between Jeffery and top corner Josh Norman on every play didn’t happen. Washington elected to keep its corners on the same side regardless of the offensive alignment. Norman won’t even be active for this game due to an injury. Does that mean Jeffery (24 receptions, 317 yards, 2 TDs) will be more active than usual?
2. Redskins guard Brandon Scherff vs. Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox. Scherff is one of the few offensive linemen in the league capable of keeping Cox from wrecking a game without help. Washington has to have a dominating effort here to have much of a chance to pull the upset.
3. Redskins running back Robert Kelley vs. Eagles middle linebacker Jordan Hicks. Kelley (5-10, 230) has proved to be a load when healthy, and though he’s been banged up recently, he should be ready to go tonight. The last time, he was held in check (10 carries, 30 yards). But Hicks is not the greatest LB at the point of attack. Expect the Redskins to test how ready Hicks is to return from a calf injury early and often.
See you tonight.
